Paris, the captivating city and capital of France, is situated in the north-central part of the country. The area along the Seine River, approximately 233 miles (375 km) upstream from the river’s mouth on the English Channel, has been inhabited since about 7600 BCE. The modern expansion of the city extends from the Île de la Cité and stretches far beyond both banks of the Seine.
Paris plays a central role in the prosperous agricultural region known as the Paris Basin and is one of eight départements of the Île-de-France administrative region. It stands as the most significant center of commerce and culture in the country. The city covers an area of 41 square miles (105 square km), while the metropolitan area spans 890 square miles (2,300 square km). The estimated population in 2020 was 2,145,906 for the city and 10,858,874 for the urban agglomeration.
Historical Paris is composed of three main parts defined by the Seine. The Île de la Cité, located at the city's center, holds religious and temporal authority. The Left Bank (Rive Gauche) has been traditionally known as the hub of intellectual life, while the Right Bank (Rive Droite) harbors the city’s economic activity, although these distinctions have become less clear in recent decades
Some of the iconic attractions in the city include the Eiffel Tower, Louvre Museum, Versailles palace, Latin Quarter, Seine River, Montmartre, Notre Dame Cathedral, Moulin Rouge, Musée d'Orsay, Luxembourg Garden, Pompidou Center, and many more.
